When we first featured tipi maker Randy Nelson, Westwood resident and owner of 2 Feathers Tipi in our artist section, we had no idea that the nostalgic tipi had such a wide range of applications. The business card says “Have Tipi, Will Travel” and these tipis are covering the map. Nelson’s first rental to the Native American Golf Tournament went to Reno and was used as a photo prop. Since then, the imaginations of his customers have taken him from Los Angeles, CA to the Grand Tetons of Wyoming.
Nelson stole the show in May at Dwell Magazine’s Dwell on Design 2015 event at the Los Angeles Convention Center, winning an award in the Modern Family category for his tipi in the children’s area. Nelson was double proud when designer David Bromstad of HGTV also won with his Grandin Road furniture collection displayed in a 2 Feathers Tipi.
Tipis at weddings have also become all the rage it seems. Brides from wine country to the coast at Big Sur are loving outdoor weddings with nostalgic tipi backdrops. Pictured are the tipis from a September wedding near Wilson Wyoming at the base of the Grand Teton mountains. Looking like a historic postcard by day and glowing lanterns by night, the mother of the bride proclaimed them the hit of the party.
Nelson tells MVL “I still get calls from my Mountain Valley Living online story all the time. Whether they call me from the phone number in the headline or read the story and click my link, customers regularly come to me because of that feature.”
